The AMPERE NMR School 2024 will take place in Zakopane which is the highest located town in Poland situated at the foot of the Tatra mountains.
Tatra, the highest mountain range in polish territory, are the highest massif in the Carpathian chain. It counts as much as 60 km in lenght and from 15 to 20 km width. Tatra mountains are divided into Bielskie Tatras (Hawrań 2152 m above sea level), High Tatras (Gerlach 2655 m above sea level.) and West Tatras (Bystra 2248 m). Located around polish-slovak border, Tatra mountains are protected by two national parks (Tatrzański Park Narodowy, TPN in Poland and Tatranský národný park, TANAP in Slovakia). Tatra mountains are exceptional for natural, historical, and cultural reasons. They have much peculiar exploration history and unchanging popularity both among tourists and explorers. Trails layout from Tatra National Park counts 275 km. You can practice both walking, climbing, skiing (downhill, cross-country, skitour) as well as restricted mountain biking. Guests can make use of mountain shelters of PTTK (on Chochołowska Clearing, Ornak Hall, Kondratowa Hall, Gąsienicowa Hall, Roztoka, Valley of Five Ponds and on Morskie Oko). Thanks to the cultural sheep pasturage program, tourists can taste original oscypkis and drink zéntyca (sheep milk whey). They can also hear genuine podhale highlander dialect and see them in their regional outfits.
Zakopane is a city in southern Poland, in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship and is the largest town in the immediate vicinity of the Tatra Mountains. It is a large winter sports center, commonly referred to as the winter capital of Poland. Zakopane is the highest located town in Poland. Its administrative borders also embrace part of the Tatra Mountains range, where the summit of Mr Świnica at 2301 m above sea level makes the highest point. Currency and money exchange The payment currency in Poland is the Polish zloty (PLN). 1 zloty = 100 grosz. The exchange rate for other currencies is set by the National Bank of Poland. Climate and weather conditions The average minimum temperature (usually the minimum temperature is noted during the night) in Zakopane in June is 9.5 °C. The amount of rain in June is high with an average of 151 mm. It rains on average a total of 19 days. The average maximum daytime temperature lies around 19.7°C (67.46°F). The sun will occasionally show itself with 177 hours of sunshine during the whole month. Visitors traveling to Zakopane should plan on bringing a totally waterproof rain jacket since it will often be raining. Plan on layering your clothes. Some days or part of the day it will be nice and warm and some moments it can be a bit chilly. Getting to Zakopane You can fly into Kraków Airport (Cracow's Balice Airport), but that's about as close as you're going to get to Zakopane by plane. Like most Alpine resorts, a bus or car journey into the mountains will be needed. Roadways on the weekends can be a bit crowded, but the buses leave regularly from Kraków's main station atnd take around 2 hours in total to get there.
